The Chumash Native Americans were the first inhabitants of the area that is now Atascadero. Atascadero in Spanish translates to, “bog” or “to become stuck” and in Chumash, loosely translates to, “a place of much water.”
The town was originally incorporated in 1913. E.G. Lewis originally founded the town, and planned it to be a utopian, planned colony. The East Coast magazine publisher hired engineers, farmers and city planners to help develop the land, including commissioning the construction of a road to connect Atascadero with Morro Bay and the Coast, which is now Highway 41.
Atascadero is located at 35.4842° N, 120.6725° W.
